Horses

You could say that horses have been part of many historic battles, proclamations and royal events. This is because horses were ridden by ancient warriors and were also used for transporting carriages of important personalities. In the absence of automobiles, horses were used for transportation. Today, however, most horses, if not seen on pasture, are seen racing on round tracks or doing some stunts as part of a sport or show.

Owning a horse is a big responsibility, so to speak. Aside from considering the cost that you have spent for getting a good breed, you also have to treat them as companiable animals. Horses are among those animals that are naturally inclined to graze in large open spaces with their herd.

Training needs

Horses can easily adapt to stable life. However, you still have to make sure that they get regular exercise and fitness training so they could improve their strength and endurance. Horses, as it seems, get bored without the company of their owners or any human.

Pasture requirements

Before pasturing horses, make sure that the pasture are free from holes, fencing and things that may harm horses such as poisonous plants. Watch out for yew, ragwort, oak leaves and acorns, to name a few.

Provide fence for the pasture of horses, so they won't be able to escape or wander, or even hurt themselves. Avoid barbed wires. Simple wire fencing may be good enough, especially if they are supported by reliable wooden posts.

Shelter for horses

The stable or shelter of horses should be able to provide protection from wind, rain, heat and other weather elements and changes. Make sure that horses have enough space in their shelters. It would also be a good idea to build shelters in places that are surrounded by trees, for better environment.

Basic needs

Of course, horses need an ample supply of water. Refill their buckets whenever their empty. Also make sure that their water container are tipped over. Feed them regularly and make sure that they're immunized.

Other than food and water, they also need proper bedding, especially when these horses are kept in a barn or stable. Apparently, horses should not stand all day on a hard surface. For their bedding, straw is a good choice. Not only is it cheaper, this kind of bedding also provides warmth and comfort to horses. Still, make sure that the straw don't contain fungal spores.

Be sure to clean the stable or barn. Remove their droppings and even clean the floor using a disinfectant. You may add a new bedding material or replace them when needed. This way, you can keep your horses safe, clean and healthy.
