THERE may not be any horses tearing up the turf at Kembla Grange Racecourse this weekend, but that won't disappoint Illawarra bookworms.

Over 50,000 titles are up for grabs in Lifeline's three-day Big Book Fair, which opened yesterday.

Pouring over her numerous selections in the psychology section, Paula Van Esveld said she was a Lifeline book fair regular and enjoyed the thrill of finding something special.

"Last time I came all three days," she said. "It's great because they constantly bring out new stock, I usually go out and come back in to get more."

Lifeline book fair ambassador and Sydney Morning Herald book reviewer Bruce Elder said he hadn't wasted any time bagging bargains including a long-searched-for publication.

"Basically it's a wonderland," he said.

"I have collected Aboriginal literature for a long time but I haven't got Mulvaney's The Prehistory of Australia, but I found it here today which I'm very pleased about."

The fair is designed to raise money for Lifeline's counselling service.

Doors will be open between 10am and 4pm today and tomorrow.
